The duration of action of this content is around 8 hours and it comes with the black box warning and limiting the administration of not more than 60mg per day for the patients. The minimum dose of Ritalin is 5 mg and it is also available in the strength of 10 mg and 20 mg. There are chances of some mild adverse effects after the administration of Ritalin like headache, decreased appetite, upset stomach, nervousness, trouble sleeping, nausea, etc. But persistent problems should be reported to seek medical help.
Ritalin and Ritalin-SR are indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) in pediatric patients 6 years and older and adults. In some patients, narcolepsy is also treated with this medication. Belonging from the Schedules II class of drugs, there is a requirement of close monitoring after the intake of Ritalin like CNS stimulants.
Ritalin should be avoided in patients who have been on any antiacids, proton pump inhibitors, like acid-reflux medications. There are high chances of serotonin syndrome when Ritalin is taken along with medications like Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine and Sertraline, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as selegiline and phenelzine, the opioids fentanyl and tramadol, the anxiolytic – buspirone.
